How to Pray the Rosary – A Simple Guide – GuadalupeRoastery

The Rosary is a special Catholic prayer. It’s like walking with the Virgin Mary while meditating on the life of Jesus. It’s not complicated: all you need is a rosary (the beads) and a little time to pray peacefully.

1. What is the Rosary?

The Rosary is a repetition of simple prayers (the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be) while reflecting on moments in the lives of Jesus and Mary called mysteries. There are four sets of mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous.

2. Preparation

  • Find a quiet place.

  • Hold your rosary in your hand.

  • Make the Sign of the Cross and offer your prayer for an intention (for yourself, for someone else, for the world).

3. Step-by-Step

  1. On the crucifix: Make the Sign of the Cross and pray the Apostles’ Creed.

  2. First large bead: Pray the Our Father.

  3. Next three small beads: Pray three Hail Marys for faith, hope, and charity.

  4. Next large bead: Pray the Glory Be and the Our Father.

  5. The five mysteries:

    • Announce the mystery (e.g., “First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation”).

    • On the large bead: Pray the Our Father.

    • On the ten small beads: Pray ten Hail Marys.

    • After the ten Hail Marys: Pray the Glory Be and, if desired, the Fatima Prayer (“O my Jesus…”).

  6. Repeat the same for all five mysteries.

  7. At the end, pray the Hail Holy Queen and any final prayers you wish.

4. Mysteries by Day

  • Monday & Saturday: Joyful

  • Tuesday & Friday: Sorrowful

  • Wednesday & Sunday: Glorious

  • Thursday: Luminous

5. Tips for Praying

  • Don’t worry if you get distracted—gently return to prayer.

  • Imagine the scene of each mystery as if you were there.

  • Pray with your heart, not just your lips.
